Pressure Washer Hose Guide: Size, Connections & Replacement
Choose a replacement or extension hose by working pressure, temperature, inside diameter, length and both end connections. The hose has to match the machine and spray gun—not just the PSI printed on a listing.
Six checks before buying a hose
Working pressure → temperature → hose ID → length → machine-side connection → gun-side connection. Treat all six as part of compatibility.

A pressure washer hose is a rated hydraulic component
The hose has to carry the machine's flow at high pressure while matching the outlet on one end and the spray gun on the other. A replacement can look almost identical to the original and still be wrong because the working-pressure rating, temperature rating or connector subtype is different.
1/4, 5/16 and 3/8-inch hose: what the sizes tell you
Hose inside diameter is not a universal pressure-washer class by itself. Current SIMPSON examples show why it is better to use the exact product specification than a blanket rule: MorFlex hoses are sold in 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch sizes with M22 connections, while the company's Monster commercial-style hose family uses 3/8-inch quick connects and a higher published pressure class.

These are examples of documented hose classes, not universal cutoffs. Other manufacturers can use different construction, ratings and connections at the same nominal hose diameter.
Pressure and temperature are separate limits
A high PSI number does not automatically make a hose suitable for hot water. SIMPSON's current Monster 3/8-inch hose is rated to 4500 PSI but is a cold-water product with a 140°F maximum. Its Armor 3/8-inch hose is also rated to 4500 PSI but is specified for hot and cold water up to 250°F.
Apply the same rule to the complete downstream system: hose, couplers, gun, wand and accessory should each be suitable for the pressure and temperature being used. Do not use the highest rating printed anywhere in the system as if it upgrades the lower-rated components.
M22 vs. quick connect at the hose ends
M22 threaded hose
Common on many residential gas and electric machines. SIMPSON's MorFlex examples use M22 threaded connections at both ends. M22 still requires subtype verification: the inner sealing stem can be 14 mm or 15 mm on systems that use those variants.
3/8-inch quick-connect hose
Common on higher-flow gas and commercial-style setups. SIMPSON's Monster 41030 uses a 3/8-inch male QC plug on one end and a 3/8-inch female QC socket on the other. Confirm which end your machine and gun require before ordering.
Replacement hose vs. extension hose
Replacement means the new hose directly takes the place of the original and therefore needs the correct connection at the pressure-washer outlet and at the gun. Extension means a second hose is joined to the first, which may require a manufacturer-supplied connector or a correctly rated coupler.
SIMPSON sells both its MorFlex and Monster families as replacement/extension hoses, but the joining method differs: MorFlex uses M22 connections and an M22 hose connector, while Monster uses 3/8-inch quick connects. Do not assume an extension will connect simply because both hoses have the same diameter.
Choosing a 50-foot or 100-foot pressure washer hose
Extra length is useful when the pressure washer can stay in one location while you move around a vehicle, driveway or jobsite. The tradeoff is more hose to route, store and protect and a longer flow path through the system.
25–50 feet
Common on residential machines and easier to handle. Match the original ID and connection family when replacing an OEM hose.
100 feet and beyond
3/8-inch hose is common in commercial-style long-hose products. Confirm the machine's flow, fitting layout, hose-reel capacity if used, and the hose's pressure/temperature ratings.

“Works with most pressure washers” is not the same as “fits every pressure washer.” MTM Hydro documents both 14 mm and 15 mm M22 adapter paths for consumer machines and notes that select models can require different fittings. It also warns that some machines with integrated hose reels may not support a simple hose upgrade.
If the outlet or gun connection does not match the common M22 or quick-connect examples shown here, identify the exact washer model and consult its parts/manual documentation before building an adapter chain.

After you confirm a 3/8-inch quick-connect hose is the right class
If your machine and spray gun use the 3/8-inch quick-connect layout and your required pressure/temperature fall within the hose rating, a 100-foot professional-style hose can be a practical comparison point. Verify both end genders and the exact published rating before purchase.

Frequently asked questions
What size pressure washer hose do I need?
Use the hose size specified for the machine or match the original hose unless the equipment manufacturer documents another option. Hose inside diameter, length, pressure rating, temperature rating and both end connections all matter; 1/4-inch, 5/16-inch and 3/8-inch hoses are not interchangeable merely because adapters can connect them.
Are pressure washer hoses universal?
No. Many hoses use common M22 or quick-connect interfaces, but M22 subtypes, quick-connect size, pressure and temperature ratings, hose diameter, length and proprietary connections can differ. Verify both ends and the operating limits before replacing or extending a hose.
Can I use a 100-foot pressure washer hose?
A 100-foot hose can be appropriate when the hose diameter, pressure and temperature ratings, fittings and machine requirements are suitable. Longer hose adds more line length, so high-flow systems commonly use larger hose sizes; do not assume that any 100-foot hose is suitable for every pressure washer.
What is the difference between M22 and 3/8-inch quick connect on a pressure washer hose?
M22 is a threaded connection family, while 3/8-inch quick connect uses a plug-and-socket coupling. A hose may use M22 at both ends or 3/8-inch quick connects, and adapters can bridge some systems. M22 connections also require the correct 14 mm or 15 mm inner-stem subtype where applicable.
Can a cold-water pressure washer hose be used with hot water?
Only if the hose manufacturer rates it for the actual water temperature. For example, SIMPSON lists its Monster cold-water hoses to 140°F, while its Armor hot/cold hose is rated to 250°F. Use the exact hose rating rather than assuming the pressure rating also covers temperature.
