Pressure Washer Hose Reel
Choose a hose reel by the high-pressure fluid path it must support—not only by how many feet of hose fit on the drum. This guide separates hose capacity, swivel ratings, ports and mounting so a storage solution does not become the weak link in the pressure-washer system.
Match the reel to the hose system—not just the hose length
A pressure-washer hose reel has two jobs: physically store the hose and, on a live reel, carry high-pressure water through its swivel and ports. Capacity, pressure, temperature and connections therefore matter separately.

How hose length and diameter affect reel selection
Reel manufacturers publish capacity by hose inside diameter because the outside diameter and bend radius determine how much hose fits on a drum. Coxreels, for example, lists the 112-3-100 as a 100-foot reel for 3/8-inch hose while its catalog also shows larger capacity when smaller 1/4-inch hose is used. That does not mean every smaller hose is automatically suitable for the pressure-washer system.
For the fluid side, keep the hose specification consistent with the Pressure Washer Hose guide. Long professional runs often use 3/8-inch hose to reduce restriction compared with small homeowner hose. The reel should not be used as a reason to downsize the working hose.
Inlet, outlet, swivel and jumper-hose connections
Many professional hose reels terminate in NPT threads rather than the quick-connect ends used on the working hose. A typical installation can require a short jumper hose from the pressure washer or unloader to the reel inlet, then a high-pressure hose connected to the reel outlet. The exact NPT size, gender and adapter path must be checked.

Do not confuse the reel with the hose rating
A 5000-PSI reel does not turn a 4000-PSI hose into a 5000-PSI hose. Conversely, a 5000-PSI hose cannot safely raise the limit of a 4000-PSI reel swivel. The complete high-pressure path is limited by its lowest-rated component.
Shopping after the reel class is established
Once hose ID, length, pressure/temperature range, ports and mounting style are known, compare reels in that class—not simply the largest drum available.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use any hose reel for a pressure washer?
No. A pressure-washer reel needs a fluid path, swivel, hose capacity and pressure/temperature ratings appropriate for the system. A garden-hose or air-hose reel can look similar while using a swivel and seals that are not rated for high-pressure water.
What size hose reel do I need for 100 feet of 3/8-inch pressure washer hose?
Choose a reel whose manufacturer explicitly lists at least 100 feet of 3/8-inch hose capacity, then verify pressure, temperature, inlet/outlet thread size, mounting space and swivel rating. Does the hose reel pressure rating have to exceed my pressure washer PSI?
The reel and every wetted component must be rated for the system pressure it can experience. The safe system limit is constrained by the lowest-rated component, so do not use a reel with a lower working-pressure rating than the system can produce.
What is the difference between a live pressure-washer reel and a storage-only reel?
A live reel routes pressurized water through a rated swivel and reel plumbing while the hose remains connected. A storage-only reel simply stores hose and is not part of the pressurized fluid path. Verify the manufacturer design instead of assuming a reel is live because it has a crank.
Can I put 1/4-inch hose on a reel made for 3/8-inch hose?
Some reels publish alternate capacity for smaller hose, but connection size, pressure rating, bend radius and intended application still matter. Use the exact manufacturer capacity table rather than estimating only from drum diameter.
