The unloader is one of the most misunderstood pressure-washer components. Match it by valve type, flow, pressure, ports, bypass arrangement and temperature—and treat adjustment as calibration, not a performance upgrade.
The unloader is a system-control component, not a pressure booster
A replacement unloader must match flow, pressure, temperature, ports and operating type. Turning an adjustment screw is not a substitute for selecting the correct nozzle, pump and valve.
What the pressure washer unloader actually controls
A positive-displacement pressure-washer pump continues moving water while it is running. The unloader gives that flow a controlled path when the spray gun closes and also regulates how much flow reaches the nozzle versus bypass. General Pump's service guidance emphasizes that the nozzle creates the restriction that produces pressure; the unloader manages the system around that restriction.
That distinction matters when diagnosing low or unstable pressure. An unloader cannot create pump flow that is not available, and tightening it beyond the correct system setting can overload the pump, drive, hose, gun or other components.

Trapped-pressure vs. flow-actuated unloaders
Immediate pressure on trigger opening
General Pump describes this style as reacting to system pressure. It keeps the downstream hose pressurized while the upstream pump side unloads into bypass when the gun is closed. It is generally more tolerant of downstream restrictions, but the initial pressure response is more abrupt.
Gradual “soft-start” pressure rise
This style reacts to flow as well as pressure. General Pump notes that added discharge hose, injectors, burners, telescoping wands and other restrictions can change its operating characteristics, so system configuration matters.
Do not infer the unloader type from appearance. Use the valve model, pump parts list or manufacturer documentation.

Symptoms: what the unloader can—and cannot—tell you
Repeated cycling, pressure spikes, failure to bypass, or pressure that does not stabilize can involve the unloader, but the same symptoms can be caused by a worn/incorrect nozzle, leaks, restrictions, injector problems, insufficient pump flow or plumbing errors. General Pump specifically notes that trapped-pressure “hunting” can be caused by downstream leakage.
Before replacing a valve, identify the existing unloader model and compare the full system. If the unloader is integrated into the pump head, the correct replacement may be a model-specific kit rather than a generic external valve.
Adjustment safety
Do not use an unloader adjustment as a casual way to raise machine pressure. General Pump states that pressure is constrained by available horsepower and the lowest-rated component. Current General Pump valve instructions also state that installation and pressure adjustment are for qualified/authorized personnel and must remain within the valve's stated pressure, flow and temperature limits.
Use a suitable pressure gauge and the exact manufacturer procedure when service is required. If the machine has been modified, re-establish the correct nozzle size and component ratings before setting the valve.
